Ariel Cake

I made this cake this weekend for another little Emma– not mine, but my Emma has now placed her order for an Ariel cake for her “number 5″ birthday… 11 months from now! She’s too funny– I think she has wanted one of every cake I’ve ever made.
This is a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Everything on here is edible, except for Ariel, Sebastian and Flounder.

Wow! I love it! Ever seen “Cake Boss”? It’s great cake decorating inspiration.
yes! I love that show!!! i like it even more than ace of cakes.
Hi – great cake. Did you use Fondant to make the rest of the cake, like the fish, shells, sponges, etc…. My daughter wants an Ariel cake for her birthday next weekend, I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind sharing what you used to make the details for the cake.
Hi! Yes, most everything is made from fondant. Some things are gumpaste, but everything can be made from fondant. You’ll want to do the shells and stuff ahead of time so that they can dry a little. I would do them a week or two in advance, but even if you only did them a few days in advance, they should still turn out fine.
Shells: made from fondant/gumpaste using the shell candy mold made by Wilton. Michaels or other craft stores carry them usually. Spray it with oil or dust with powdered sugar first to keep the fondant from sticking when you press it in there. Once dry, attach to the cake with royal icing.
Fish: in the clay section of michaels or other craft store, you should find a push mold for fish, shells, etc. That’s how I made the fish.
Coral: roll fondant into skinny worms then roll over something textured to give it definition. A crumbled piece of aluminum foil works well. Cut it to the length you need then indent the tops with the end of a paint brush.
Letters: I used white fondant that I rolled into long, very skinny worms and then free formed into the letters.
Ariel, Sebastian, flounder: dolls from the pack sold at the Disney store.
Sand: a combo of light brown sugar and raw sugar.
Flowers: cut using various flower cutters and dried in cups.
Seaweed: free formed using fondant.
Rocks on top of cake: free formed. Pressed into foil to give it texture.
Good luck!
